Casino affiliate SEO: +38% organic traffic — 315% ROI

The Challenge

A Malta-based operator running a casino affiliate site for the Finnish market came to us with a hybrid stack — WordPress behind a headless React front end — and a toplist that was curated by hand. Editors re-ranked operators every week, and the process kept surfacing casinos that had already closed or had not launched yet.

Key obstacles:

  • Manual, error-prone toplist management that surfaced closed or pre-launch operators
  • A casino toplist REST endpoint taking 5+ seconds to respond and OOM-killing containers under load
  • Structured data errors blocking rich results in the SERP
  • Crawl-budget waste from 2MB+ pages, non-crawlable hash anchor links, and bloated sitemaps
  • A concurrent affiliate-backend migration and new-country onboarding running in parallel
  • A high-competition, heavily regulated iGaming market on a split technical architecture

The Approach

Technical SEO and crawlability

  • Rewrote the casino toplist REST endpoint to remove the performance bottleneck and stop the container crashes
  • Brought page sizes back under Google’s 2MB crawl limit
  • Replaced hash-based links with real internal navigation and added pagination to archive and review pages
  • Created a Google News XML sitemap and removed author profiles from the sitemaps
  • Cleaned dead casino links, fixed quiz references, and dropped legacy .html permalink suffixes
  • Corrected structured data markup and image schema URLs
  • Deployed an automated internal-linking system with a content-diff cron, so only genuine changes trigger updates
  • Kept the stack current — WordPress 6.9 to 7.0, plugin updates, CI/CD regression testing

Smart Toplist automation

The core initiative was replacing the manual toplist with an engine that ranks operators on its own:

  • Automatic eligibility filtering that excludes closed and pre-deal casinos
  • A “New” filter plus pinned positions with first-time-deposit-ranked auto-fill
  • Logic that promotes newer operators when FTD metrics are level
  • Automated toplist table generation, with bonus fields mapped straight from the affiliate backend
  • A “last updated” date that reflects every toplist change

On-page, E-E-A-T and CRO

  • Increased review-score precision from 0.5 to 0.1 increments
  • Redesigned review headers and cards with rich-text pros and cons
  • Standardised bonus visibility and merged the “last updated” date with the author byline for stronger authorship signals
  • Compacted product cards for mobile and simplified the top-card layout
  • Added casino comparison tables and seasonal campaign banners
  • Onboarded six new license countries with automated bonus placements

Operator-surfacing errors after launch

Resolving the structured-data errors brought rich results back. Organic traffic finished 38% up, operator click-through improved on the back of the new card and bonus presentation, and the toplist engine now runs with no manual work at all. Against a $40,000 investment over 10 months, the engagement returned roughly 315% — and the automation keeps compounding after the campaign.
