Cricket predictions technical SEO: 60,000 monthly visitors — €20k/week
The Situation
A Malta-based cricket betting and predictions site — live scores, odds, and match predictions — had a productive content team but could not turn that output into rankings. Technical faults were quietly capping organic growth no matter how much the writers published.
The Challenge
- Wasted crawl budget: two years of expired match and prediction pages sat live with noindex tags, and “Show More” buttons hid content from crawlers that do not click interactive elements
- Contradictory indexing signals: pages carried duplicate robots meta tags with conflicting index/noindex instructions, and the homepage’s title, description, and Open Graph tags rendered near the end of the body instead of in the head
- Sitemap problems: the news sitemap listed every article ever published, breaking Google News eligibility; one sitemap was not referenced from the sitemap index; noindex pages still appeared in the XML sitemaps
- Broken redirect chains: tournament slugs were stripped during redirects, dumping high-authority backlinks and exact-match anchor text onto a generic schedule page
- Slow indexing: prediction pages often were not indexed until after the match had finished, missing their search-value window
- Oversized pages: around seven pages exceeded Google’s 2MB uncompressed HTML crawl limit, risking content truncation
- Silent data-sync failures: back-end jobs failed without warning, leaving whole tournaments and venues with no dedicated page
The Approach
Crawl budget optimization
- Built an automated archiving system that moves pages older than a month into an /archive/ directory with 301 redirects, then blocks /archive/ in robots.txt — user access and backlink equity preserved, crawl budget freed
- Replaced accordion “Show More” pagination with standard numbered pages so every result is crawlable
- Expanded collapsed tables of contents to expose the internal links inside them
- Limited the news sitemap to a rolling 48-hour window, per Google News requirements
Indexing signals cleanup
- Removed the duplicate, contradictory robots meta tags so each page gives one clear instruction
- Stripped noindex URLs out of the XML sitemaps and added the orphaned sitemap to the index
- Moved the homepage meta tags from the body into the head for proper crawler and social-platform reading
- Fixed the article:modified_time meta tag to update dynamically, so SERP snippets stop showing stale dates despite daily content updates
Faster indexing of time-sensitive pages
- Integrated the Google Indexing API to ping Google the moment a prediction or schedule page is added or updated — indexing time dropped from days to minutes
- Automated schedule-table generation and its supporting internal links, so they are live the instant the page is created
- Repaired the redirect chains to reconnect high-authority backlinks to the pages they were meant for
On-page and Core Web Vitals
- Trimmed the oversized pages back under the 2MB crawl limit
- Installed automated keyword-based internal linking to money pages for consistent, scalable link distribution
- Added dynamic month/year shortcodes to keep evergreen content current without manual edits
- Removed unused live-scorecard code to cut page weight
- Fixed the back-end sync gaps so every tournament and venue generates its own page
Results
Peak organic traffic during busy tournament windows reached 65,000–68,000 monthly visitors, against a 15,000–30,000 off-season baseline. Time-sensitive prediction and schedule pages now index within minutes of publishing instead of days, and the tournament-slug redirect fix recovered ranking power that had been leaking to a generic page. Organic visibility drives roughly €86,700 per month — about €20,000 a week — against ~€8,000/month in combined technical SEO and backlink spend, a 10:1 return. Technical foundations were silently capping growth; fixing them turned the content team’s existing output into rankings and revenue with no extra publishing.
